Parc de Can Vidalet
Currently, Can Vidalet is one of the most emblematic historic gardens of the Metropolitan Parks Network and the most important urban green space of Esplugues de Llobregat. In addition to the attraction, which shares with any other park, being a place for rest, leisure and approach to nature, offers a very special supplement: the ability to enjoy and learn from the valuable Old elements that keep jealously (the palace, the lake, the lake, the laundry room, the vegetation, etc.) and of its characteristic organization of the space.
This type of garden combined geometric designs, close to the houses, with others of almost spontaneous vegetation on an artificially created relief, which sought to mimic the natural landscape. Water was a fundamental element, distributed to the last corners by a network of small channels. Cascades and springs provided the sound to the visual set.
Among the vegetation predominate native species, with an important presence of holm oaks and white pines, many of them centenary and of exceptional appearance. From the vicinity, the high peaks of the pines stand out from the tree mass that surrounds them and they are the best indicator of the near presence of the Park.
Zone A. The palace
Near the main road, was the main entrance to the estate, through a magnificent wrought iron door. This place, nowadays on the ground floor of the Park, includes landscaped parterres, which form small oak and pine stands and some exemplary trees (holm oak, shadow shadow 1) and palm leaf look). The palace, currently used as a language school, is the only one of the mansions of the farm that has been standing. It is a building with a neoclassical inspiration, with a ground floor and two floors, from the first decades of the 20th century. A round-point portal, flanked by pilasters with capitals, gives access to the ground floor. The roof is flat and protected by a balustrade. On the south façade, a gentle, two-sided stairway stands out that goes up to the main floor. In front, there is a small trimmed garden and, under the house, a refuge from the civil war.
Zone B. The lake
Elements typical of a natural landscape (the lake, the island, the cave, the walls and the stone vaults, vegetation and fauna) and other charged with symbolism (the temple and the menhir) make up this
sector, the most emblematic and characteristic of the Park.
A semicircular rocks front, between which the cascade jumped, flanked the lake on the west side and closed the grotto, with openings where the games could be seen
the water when falling to the lake. In front of the island there are four rocky feet emerge from the lake and join together forming a vault, below which there is the jetty. The island is also the magnificent pedestal of a temple, with a circular floor, consisting of eight columns strewn with Corinthian capitals, which support a drum with reliefs of vegetal motifs. A suspended bridge of iron joins it with firm ground. Molses and other plants live between stone blocks, with different shades, creating a fresher and humid environment. In the water the presence of a menhir surprises. At the other end of the lake, a group of taxis, an unusual species that originates in marshy areas of North America, grows inside the water as if they were in their natural habitat.
Between the vegetation they emphasize the white, impressive pines, with
thick trunks and raised bushes. Among them it is necessary to stand out
especially "the Right Pi" 1). Between the lake and the palace, a hill,
Tightened by trees and shrubs, with a group of palm trees dating to
The southern part carefully hides the tiny pond dominated by one
melancholic sculpture
Area C. The Laundry
When the hoses were still not used, the gardens had to solve the problem of irrigation by storing the necessary water in a raised reservoir, from where it was distributed throughout the enclosure by a small channel system. Water was, moreover, an important decorative element, creator of freshness and joy in the environment. At the moment the laundry room, on the beautiful tile arcades, is also a viewpoint where you can reach two spacious and elegant stairways. From the top, in the north, you see the mountain of Sant Pere Màrtir (399 m) in front of the telephone antenna at the top, occupying the site of the old hermitage dedicated to the martyr Saint Peter. To the east there is the district of Finestrelles, the Tibidabo mountain and the Fabra observatory. Closer the hospital of San Juan de Dios is distinguished.
Downstairs, between the stairs, there is a curious specimen of holm oak with feet that grow together, possible streams of trees cut to the ground. The holm oak is one of the most characteristic species in the Mediterranean region, totally adapted to a temperate winter weather, dry, hot summers and irregular rains. On the trunks (about 15 meters high), the dense and dark hills form a thick gloomy vault, creating a fresh and humid environment. Bark it's cracked. The fruit, acorn, has traditionally been used as a food for livestock. The wood, very hard, is used to make agricultural tools, butcher's balls, car wheels, etc. and until well into the twentieth century to obtain coal. Before man intervened, most of the Mediterranean region had to be covered by the thick dark green mantle of the holm oak trees. Now reduced to more or less large cuts, holm-oak woods are dominated by holm oak woods, with a bush consisting of shrubs and small, hard and often sharp-leaved lianas that form a tight and impenetrable forest mass. In this sector, located in the center of the Park, you will find the service area, next to a walk of date palm trees. Small paths communicate placetes and parterres with different designs, varied vegetation. Zone D. The TuronetTocant on the promenade of the palm trees, a ramp of a spiral rises to the top of the hill, between a vegetation of oaks, bushes, pine trees and marfulls. Above, an image of Santa Magdalena had been installed. In the north of this sector, there is a group of very large figures. The pine trees are all pineapples, almost the only ones in the park of this species. Near the pétanque tracks there is a grouping of tombs and one of braquialons, two species of exotic origin. Service informationIndustrian interest of historical-architectural interest, singular vegetation, historic garden, sculpture, lake, fountain, panoramic view, potable water, pétanque court, children's games, elderly people games, football goalkeepers, basketball baskets, ping-pong table, bicycle parking, bar, WC.
