Parc de la Torre-Roja

From the pre-existing avenues with trees and pine forests, the park responds to the demand for new green spaces. The red tower avenue, bordered by rows of bananas, is the central promenade, the integrating element of the different spaces located on either side, and the path to reach the equipment area.
The magnificent Torre-Roja building flanks the entrance to the park. Alongside her, a beautiful bronze sculpture "the baseball glove" pays homage to the players of this sport that is quite implanted in Viladecans.

History

Despite being a young Park, and as such having a short history, its territory belonged to centuries to one of the oldest and most prosperous properties of Viladecans centered on the Torre-roja, which we must necessarily refer to.


La Torre-roja and La Quadra Burgesa La Torre-roja was, for centuries, a jurisdictional lordship (the Quadra Burgesa), which had its own territory and was independent of Viladecans and of Sant Climent de Llobregat. Their inhabitants paid royalties to the lords for the use of land, at the head of which a batlle administered goods and rents on behalf of the lord. There is a list with batlle names as of 1529.

Since the mid-nineteenth century, the inhabitants of the Quadra Burgesa were definitely incorporated into Viladecans.

The names of the Red Tower
The Red Tower (named after the reddish hues of its stones) has repeatedly taken on the name of its lords. The oldest are mentioned in a parchment of 1527 that deals with a sale of the tower Burgesa or Roja, where it says that the house in another time was called San Francisco and Marcusa tower. The Marcusa tower was owned by the heirs of Bernat Marcús, a powerful banker and merchant of Barcelona, ​​who died in 1166. Between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries, the estate was the Burgeses (in 1265, Jaume I granted Guillem Burges the civil and criminal jurisdiction of the villages of Gavà and Viladecans) and took the name of Burgesa tower.

Architectural features
The most important building of the group that forms the Torre-roja is the slender central tower of medieval origin. It has a square floor plan and four floors high, with a Gothic triforated window on the first floor. In three of the four faces it presents a small matacà, and the group crowns a series of battlements. From above an extensive territory dominates. The front door gives access to the modern palace (late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries) built around it and the central porch, with half-point arches.
