Begues

Begues is a small town located 30 km from Barcelona, surrounded by nature and with a great historical and cultural wealth.

In a valley between the Garraf massif and the Ordal mountains, its location allows for many varied visits, highlighting El Mur (the Wall), the viewpoint of silence, a tranquil place full of peace, ideal for connecting with nature and enjoying panoramic views of the Collserola mountain range and the Llobregat Delta.

Within the village, you can visit the old church of the rectory (from the 16th century with a Renaissance portal), the parish church of Sant Cristòfol, and the boundary cross from 1312. The Festa de la Cucafera, a large fire beast, is an example of popular celebration.

Numerous excursions depart from the very center of the village, among which stands out the Les Fonts Route (the Springs) and El Padró. You can also start an easy walk that will take you to Pi Gros, the remains of a historic sunyer pine that has a very characteristic trunk marked by strong wind twisting. It is estimated that it was over 400 years old when it died and is considered one of the largest in Catalonia.

You will also have the opportunity to take a guided route of 4 km, through which you can discover how the ancient inhabitants of this limestone territory of the Garraf massif lived in the past. The Ferret, or Carst route, has been designed by CIPAG (Collective for the Research of Prehistory and Archeology of Garraf-Ordal) and is suitable for all audiences, you just need to wear good shoes and a canteen to enjoy a tour that will take you deep into the cavities and rock formations of the area, such as the Can Sadurní chasm, a large underground cavity that will take your breath away, or the Can Sadurní wolf salt mine, of great historical and cultural importance for the area, as salt was one of the most important resources for many years. There will also be no shortage of dry stone constructions, old lime kilns or cobbled paths.

One of the outstanding attractions of the municipality is the guided visit to the Can Sadurní cave, an archaeological site in the process of being excavated for more than four decades, which contains one of the best archaeological stratigraphies in the Western Mediterranean referring to modern prehistory. Remains have been found in it from the Epipaleolithic period (11,000 years), the age of the last communities of hunters and gatherers, to remains from the 19th century. Of particular note are the levels with Neolithic remains, where it has been possible to document different moments of burials, remains of beer brewing and "l'Encantat", a human-shaped figurine.
